Do you have the New Year Blues or is Your New Year Bright? I have made a determination that I cannot have a better tomorrow, if I continue thinking about yesterday. Yesterday is today’s memory, and tomorrow is today’s dream. Your future hopes that you have learned something from your past because it doesn’t want to repeat it again.
Are you weary of starting every year on a high note and ending the year with a disappointing low one? Perhaps, you felt as though you gave it the ‘old college try’, only to end up back in the elementary stages of your personal development. Are you one, who lost weight in the first trimester of 2012, but you closed the year gaining back the pounds you’ve lost, plus an additional ten pounds? Or, have you looked at your business books thinking your company progressed, and discovered that the business books illustrate the business to have never really read out of the red.
Weary people are leery people. When you are doubtful about your prospects for the future, you become apprehensive and hyper critical of every scenario in your life because you are suspicious that you are being set up for a huge disappointment. Therefore, you are cautious as to think that this can be a wonderful year for you. A cynical person will almost always choose to doubt, disbelieve or discredit, even when there is no logical reason to do so. Cynicism will hurt no one’s future but your own.
Deep inside the heart of many people who opt out of being optimistic doesn’t want to continue living behind the wall of negativity. They want to believe that there is something great on the horizon for them. So, why do people think and behave like this? There are different thoughts on the matter—some regard cynicism as a personal defense mechanism whereby people prevent themselves from opening up to love and friendship for fear of being hurt. However, I say that it doesn’t really matter what psychiatrists say about the cause. Over psycho analyzing the situation can simply be addressed if the person can take a sincere look inside him or herself and find out why they are a cynic.
When did cynicism become a personal trait of yours? Many people are just plain frustrated at their past efforts and have become down-right cynical as a result of it. If they would look into their own mind and heart, they will discover the reason why they are so cynical.
The nature of cynicism is not only of words, but of spirit. We can say true things constructively. We can criticize constructively. We can state negative facts with a right attitude—in innocence, however, when we begin to ridicule, mock, scorn, or criticize, it is coming from a heart of personal hurt due to past disappointments and failures. If yesterday is no more, then why do you have to conjure it up again?
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. Even if last year was a good year for you, the New Year yet holds something even greater. Prior years should no longer be considered the ‘good old years’; the good year is now the New Year. Oprah Winfrey said, “When I look into the future, it’s so bright it burns my eyes.”
