Mental Toughness
It is easy to sit back and analyze another person’s performance, and say what you would do if you were in their situation. The truth of the matter is, if you have never been there or been trained for certain situations, you have no clue as to how you would respond under such severe mental pressure. Sometimes we are unable to change our environment to manage stress – this may be the case where we do not have the power to change a situation. Therefore, a person must learn to adapt and improvise in order to overcome the mental challenges and to have the best possible chance of succeeding. This is only accomplished with training.
The military trains soldiers for war, boxers are trained to fight in the ring, racecar drivers practice driving at great speeds, and football players practice being tackled and hit on the field. What do you practice that causes you to believe you would respond better than those you watch on television? Mental toughness is absolutely needed when you have been knocked down, mentally frustrated, or physically worn. It is during these times that you discover what you are really made of.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. A person who understands anything about boxing realizes that boxing in the ring against an opponent will cause you to use muscles you never thought you had, make you feel like your heart is about to burst out of your chest, and you will be sucking for oxygen that you will think left this planet. Stamina is the ability to endure or hang in there when everything in you is shouting, “Quit!” These boxers are trained to fight through being battered and tired.
Though virtually everyone experiences stress or mental pressure, sometimes the way we react to stress amounts to self-sabotage! We’ve all found ourselves being impatient with people or taking out frustrations on innocent bystanders, or causing unnecessary conflicts and mental stress because stress is clouding our judgment. And while some people find themselves creating this type of drama in their lives occasionally, others make this self sabotage a way of life, continually creating additional mental and emotional stress for themselves without being aware of their own role in this!
The real enemy to your ability to overcome is inside your head in the form of negative self-talk. The way we talk to ourselves during challenging times can follow us through each experience like a ray of sunshine or a dark cloud surrounding us and blocking our vision. When you communicate to yourself negative possible outcomes instead of positive events, you miss the important benefits of creating a great result as an alternative of a self-fulfilling prophecy by believing that your stress level is more than you can handle.
If your habit has been to use negative self-talk in your daily life, it is not too late to learn positive self-talk. One principle must be followed under all circumstances; and it is this, ‘Never speak out of your frustration.’ What you say usually influences what you do. So, if you want to overcome the negative effects of mental pressure, instead of managing it, learn to speak positive words. Your words are the material to create a better situation for you instead of allowing the situation to dictate to you.
