Are you at a place in life where you feel like your crutch is no longer available, and you’re finding it difficult to move on?
If you are going to move forward with your life after a disappointing divorce, a failed business, or a job that just doesn’t meet your personal expectations, you have to let it go. Your moving forward is only impeded by your past if you can’t let go of it. Some things are difficult to release if you still see them as options. If an old acquaintance still hangs around in your head, it’s because you haven’t released him or her from your heart.
Today, I’m really emphasizing the message of moving on. Whether it refers to a business deal gone sour, a significant other walking out on you, or the company you have worked for giving you the pink slip after twenty years; I believe the only way to get someone’s attention is to stop giving them yours.
What may have happened to you could prove to be a blessing in disguise. I know most people don’t like surprises, especially negative ones, but oftentimes, before the so-called surprise, in your heart you were able to see the handwriting on the wall. Without realizing it, people often lead themselves into situations that they brought on themselves. People are not creatures of circumstances, they are creators of them.
For instance; I was speaking with a young 28 year old who attended one of my business conclaves. He mentioned how disgruntled he was with how his job released him after promising him that he had a future with the company. However, he always had a desire to start his own computer analyst systems company, but was just too afraid. I suggested he think about the events proceeding his dismissal from the company. “Did you ever talk about your dreams to your co-workers or boss?”, I asked. He said, “Yes, all the time. They were totally aware of my abilities and desires to one day own my own company and become like the owner.” “There you have it”, I replied. “You fired yourself.”
You see, in this young man’s heart, he created a way out so that he could be pushed into his dream instead of walking into it. He attracted what he expected by speaking openly to his boss about his aspirations. He reflected his desire to own his own company, he became what he respected, and mirrored what he admired.
You can always get another job, but you can’t always live your dream. The realization of losing a job proves that it is not a part of your destiny. Some people may have been a part of the history of where you are now, but they are not a part of your destiny and where you’re going. Sometimes, you have to respect yourself enough to move on, or you’ll end up like your past—left behind.
“You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.”
~ Johnny Cash
Allow your life and heart to become flexible, because when you do, they can never be broken into the thousands of pieces that some people wish they would. See yourself recovering from your loss, but also recovering the dignity and passion that may have been lost in the process.
Your transformation will occur after you are healed from your disappointments and personal wounds. Then you can start investing again in other people, however your greatest investment and asset is you.
