In retrospect, if you consider the cause or reason for some of your troubles, you will discover idleness at the root of most of them. The mind is a unique mechanism and it requires deliberate actions or else it will conjure up its own actions. You might think that when you take a vacation, your mind should do the same. To the contrary, the mind can never take a break because it controls all of your faculties. It may sound nice to rest your brain; however, the only true rest your brain receives is when you are asleep. Marquis De Vauvenargues, a minor French writer and moralist said, “The idle always have a mind to do something.”
Idleness is sweet, and its consequences are cruel
~ John Quincy Adams
It will cost you more than just time when you are idle; it will cost you money. Moreover, if you cannot afford to be idle in life, what makes you think you can afford to be idle in business? Life and business operate on the same echelon and both should be taken seriously. More opportunities have been forfeited and dreams destroyed because of idleness. To be idle is nothing more than doing nothing, which takes precedence over activity.
Idleness is the busiest you’ll ever get, and at the end of the day, you will discover that you have accomplished nothing. It requires a great deal of effort to keep from engaging your mind. Therefore, turn your unintentional thoughts into deliberate power and watch how you can create opportunities for yourself.
The absence of occupation is not a rest stop. My friend, please do not confuse being idle with being a procrastinator. Although these two diminutive mindsets are interrelated, they are not the same, yet, they produce the same destructive results. It is clear by definition that these two words are not the same. Procrastination means to put off, defer, or delay while the word idle means inactive or immobile. Being fired or laid off your job is simply an opportune time to learn a new trade or explore your options. You knew that these options existed before you had your unfortunate job experience, but you never had time from your job to explore them. Now, you have the time.
Do not allow idleness to deceive you. If you give idleness a chance today, it will steal tomorrow from you. Don’t sit back and do nothing! Fine-tune your skills, recapture your fervor, or pick up vital new skills that can land you a better paying job. If you didn’t have the time before you were fired or laid off, you certainly have the time while you are between employments.
Three activities can be done to not only stretch your mind, but also turn your free time into learning time. Activity is the key. Take the first step toward a happier, more productive life and make your idle time an investment time into your future.
- Take the time to explore your hidden talents. Unlocking other talents can introduce you to other ways of making money, besides having a job.
- Fine-tune your present skills. You learn by doing. This can help you discover new ways of doing old things.
- Pursue your passion. Tap into your creativity. Follow your dream. Take control of your life.
Remove the mental blocks to success by first turning off the internal switch of discouragement and do not allow idleness space to operate in your life. When you apply these three practical suggestions while between jobs, you will be making an investment into your future. Moreover, you will create more time in your schedule for things that truly matter.
